Founded in 1393, Zojoji became the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns in 1598 and grew into one of the largest centers of Buddhist learning in Japan, with thousands of priests and students studying there during the Edo period. Today it stands at the foot of Tokyo Tower, one of the city's most recognizable temple grounds.
